Typical for Chicagoland, late fall 2005 brought on winter weather, with workways blanketed in sloppy, wet snow and temperatures below freezing. Not exactly ideal for paving and road work. Determined not to be outdone by Mother Nature’s whims, Gallagher engineers suggested to IDOT that Gallagher’s pre-heaters be used to extend the paving season by thawing the subbase and melting the snow so paving could continue. IDOT evaluated the suggestion, and then accepted the recommendation.
This in turn allowed the project to continue moving forward, so that other contractors would be able to work through the winter months, thus helping to bring the I-80, I-94, I-294 project closer to the original timetable.
